Responses Through the Somatic Body

Responses Through the Somatic Body
Fight. Flight. Freeze. Fawn.
Before your mind tells a story…
Your body tells the truth.
There are moments when your heart races before you understand why. Your shoulders tighten. Your breath becomes shallow. You suddenly want to leave, defend yourself, become invisible, or make everyone around you comfortable.
These are not character flaws.
They are your nervous system’s ancient language of protection.
Fight says, “I need to protect myself.”
Flight says, “I need to get away.”
Freeze says, “If I become still, perhaps I’ll be safe.”
Fawn says, “If I keep everyone happy, maybe I’ll belong.”
Each response was designed to help you survive something your body believed was too much.
The beautiful thing is this:
These responses are not your identity.
They are simply messages.
And messages are meant to be listened to—not judged.
The moment you become aware of your body’s response, you create a small space between reaction and response. In that space lives choice. In that space lives healing.
Instead of asking,
“What’s wrong with me?”
Try asking,
“What is my body trying to protect?”
That single question shifts you from criticism to compassion.
From shame to curiosity.
From surviving… to understanding.
A Quiet Practice
Pause wherever you are.
Place one hand over your heart and one over your belly.
Without changing your breath, simply notice it.
Then softly say:
“Body… thank you for protecting me.”
“You don’t have to carry this moment alone.”
“I’m here with you now.”
Take one slow inhale.
One slow exhale.
Notice what softens.
Healing doesn’t begin when the Fight, Flight, Freeze, or Fawn responses disappear.
Healing begins the moment you stop treating them as enemies and begin meeting them as faithful protectors that are finally being invited to rest.
Perhaps today, your greatest act of self-love is not fixing yourself.
Perhaps it is listening to your body with kindness for the very first time.
Quiet Reflection
When my body responds today, can I choose curiosity before judgment?
Stay in Peace.
