Trust is a Somatic Experience

Trust Is a Somatic Experience

We often think of trust as something the mind decides.

But long before the mind says, “I trust you,” the body has already answered.

The body is always listening.

It notices the tone of a voice.

The gentleness of a touch.

The consistency of someone’s presence.

The space they create for your truth.

Trust is not only built through words.

It is built through repeated experiences of safety.

When we feel safe, something remarkable happens.

The breath deepens.

The shoulders soften.

The jaw releases.

The heart opens.

The nervous system quietly whispers,

“You can rest here.”

This is why trust is a somatic experience.

It lives in the body before it becomes a belief.

The opposite is also true.

When trust has been broken, the body remembers.

It may hesitate.

Become guarded.

Pull away.

Remain alert, even when the danger has passed.

This is not because the body is weak.

It is because the body is wise.

It is trying to protect what is precious.

The beautiful news is that trust can be restored.

Not through promises alone…

But through consistent moments of care.

A friend who keeps showing up.

A partner who listens without judgment.

A caregiver who treats you with dignity.

A quiet moment where you learn to trust your own breath again.

Healing begins when the body has enough experiences that gently say,

“You are safe now.”

Trust is not something we force.

It is something we cultivate.

One conversation.

One breath.

One act of kindness.

One moment of presence at a time.

A Quiet Somatic Practice

Place one hand over your heart.

The other over your belly.

Notice your breath without changing it.

Now gently ask yourself,

“Where in my body do I already know what trust feels like?”

Don’t search for an answer.

Simply notice.

Perhaps it’s warmth in your chest.

Softness in your belly.

A deeper breath.

Or a quiet sense of ease.

Stay with that feeling for a few breaths.

Allow your body to remember.

Because trust does not begin when fear disappears.

It begins the moment your body experiences enough safety to soften.

And perhaps the deepest trust you will ever know…

Is the quiet relationship you build with yourself.

Returning to your breath.

Listening to your body.

Honoring your inner wisdom.

Again and again.

Stay in Peace. 💫
